Thoughts and Reflections for 3.24.2020

Greetings! And so the work continues…

***Beginning 3.27.2020 I will only send emails to those who have sent feedback. If you would like to be kept on the email list, please let me know. All of my posts are available on my website: Electronic communication can be a form of clutter and it is my intention to be mindful and respectful.

Clutter. Books, articles and television shows have shared information regarding the subject of clutter. Since so much energy has been utilized to consider and deal with clutter, it may be worth considering that all of this attention given to clutter means that clutter has tremendous value. When some “thing” is seen as having value our relationship with “thing” shifts. Let’s examine the possibilities of what clutter actually is and gain an understanding of its value and meaning in our life.

Clutter by definition is “to fill or litter with things in a disorderly manner.” All right. What I have observed in my work is that each person has their own unique relationship with what they determine as “their clutter.” And with that said, I’ve listened to comments where individuals have scrutinized the clutter of others. Because clutter sometimes invokes a negative response in our culture, there is often a desire to “hide” clutter. It is as if the disorderly parts of our lives should be tucked away as to eliminate any judgement that may resound if clutter is discovered. What if we actually celebrated our clutter and within that celebration began a new relationship that allowed us to be at peace with our clutter by discovering everything we need is within reach.

Show me your junk drawer and I will share with you a bounty of possibilities!

The inevitable junk drawer is filled with all of the uncategorized pieces we’ve collected along the way. It’s the stuff not worthy of display next to the family photos, yet it has value since at the moment in time when a decision needed to be made regarding it’s placement amongst our many collections of items (spoons, forks, cups, plates, shells, record albums, keys, etc…) it wasn’t mindlessly discarded. Instead, it was consciously placed with the other uncategorized items in our collection of “stuff.”

In Feng Shui our closets, drawers and cabinets represent our subconscious mind. (I just heard echoes of screams…WHAT!?!) Think of the power and creativity in the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind stores everything! Beliefs, patterns, memories and skills are just right there ready to be accessed to help move us through any number of experiences (for example; riding a bike). By consciously going into the spaces that are typically closed (closets, drawers, cabinets) you may begin to see and understand your life a little differently. Life can be functioning and organized on the outside, but when you take the time to filter through the pieces of your closet, drawers and cabinets you begin the process of creating opportunity by shifting things around. What do you really need? The items inside these spaces of your home contribute and support existing thoughts and patterns (for example; the clothes you choose to wear). By examining items and possibly removing them you open the opportunity for new thoughts and patterns to appear to better serve you. Most every thing we possess is associated with an experience. Is it time to consider being open to new experiences?

Our world outside is changing. Adapting to external change requires a conscious response internally to remain productive and successful. The simple task of taking inventory and perhaps organizing a cluttered area will spark the subconscious mind into seeing and unleashing a creative solution to living a life which exceeds what was thought possible. Take pride and value your clutter; it is your inner genius waiting to be let loose!
